Maplebrook alumnus, Rodney Smith, Jr. (Class of 2008) is serving both his older and younger neighbors in the community of Huntsville, AL with his organization, Raising Men Lawn Care Service.

After graduating from Maplebrook School in 2008, Mr. Smith went onto college in Alabama, where he earned a degree in computer science. In 2015, Smith founded R.M.L.C.S., which provides free lawn care and driveway snow-shoveling services to Huntsville residents who are elderly, veterans, disabled, and single mothers by organizing boys and girls (7-17) to lend their neighbors a hand. In doing so, R.M.L.C.S. not only gives back to the community by taking care of lawns, but also fosters confidence and a growing sense of community awareness & responsibility in the youth who take the rakes and shovels into their hands to serve their neighbors.

In addition to being a mentor for the younger members of his Alabama community, Mr. Smith is an inspiring member of our alumni – one that current Maplebrook students can look up to as a role model. “His sensitivity and devotion towards others is amazing,” states Maplebook Head of School, Donna Konkolics. “Needless to say we are quite proud of Rodney.”

R.M.L.C.S. aims to have chapters in each of the 50 states. Please visit their website to learn how you might start a chapter in your own community. They are also on Facebook.
