Daily and Weekend Life
Emphasis during the week is on academic study. Mondays and Wednesdays have a slight schedule variation from other weekdays. Since team sports run Tuesday through Saturday, Monday afternoon at 3:30 provides an opportunity for clubs such as drama, golf and ceramics to meet. Wednesday at 1:15 is Lyceum time when students meet as a group to see presentations by fellow students, participate in community service fund raisers such as the American Red Cross’s Jump Rope for Heart, or listen to outside speakers and entertainers. Also on Wednesdays team sports begin at 2:40 allowing for more athletic games.
While weekend activities differ from those on academic days, Maplebrook remains dedicated to the same supervision and structure. Saturday mornings provide both academic and enrichment classes. Each week, students select their interests from a range of on and off campus activities developed by the Director of Student Activities with student recommendations for Friday and Saturday nights as well as Sundays. Selections may include:
- A trip to NYC to see a Broadway show
- Shopping at a local mall
- Attending a sports function at the Pepsi Arena in Albany
- Making tile plaques in arts & crafts
- Enjoying a movie
- Biking the Rail Trail
- Hiking one of the numerous trails in the area
- Visiting Franklin Roosevelt’s Hyde Park home or one of the many other historic sites nearby.
The on-campus social events are often arranged by members of the student government. These students play an important role in setting up dances, special dinners, and other fundraising events.
