Executive functioning is imperative to every person’s success. The Institute for Collegiate and Career Studies has developed a comprehensive program to help students improve such all-important skills of attention, emotional regulation, inhibitory control, initiation, organization, planning, self-monitoring and working memory.
Throughout the year, students’ executive functioning is measured through pre-testing, mid-year and post-testing. They engage in specific executive functioning training in the classroom and the boarding school environment allows for round the clock teaching, monitoring and reinforcing executive functioning.
Through our carefully crafted program and our partnership with c8sciences, each and every student makes positive gains in their executive functioning.
Executive Functioning: What It Means and Why It Matters
A collection of brain abilities known as executive functioning enables us to plan, concentrate, arrange our everyday activities, and retain instructions. The prefrontal cortex of the brain controls these skills and are fundamental to how people, professionals and students cope with responsibilities at work, home and school.
What Are Executive Functions?
So what exactly are executive functions? These include working memory, cognitive flexibility, impulsivity, task initiation, organization and emotional control. These skills are part of a person’s time management, problem solving and information processing skills. These skills affect how a person solves problems, manages time and processes information.Good executive functioning makes everyday tasks feel possible. When it’s bad, simple procedures can feel like a burden.
Assessment of Executive Functioning Skills
A proper assessment of executive functioning skills helps to identify where the student or individual is struggling most. Such assessments are conducted by professionals—psychologists or learning specialists—who use formal tools and observe behavior. The results inform the design of targeted support plans, whether in academic settings or everyday life.
Programs and Schools That Support Executive Function
How to Choose the Best Schools for Executive Function Disorder
Specialized schools for executive function disorder can be very helpful for those students struggling with attention, learning or processing issues. These schools are organized with procedures, small class sizes and trained staff who understand how executive functioning skills assessment deficits impact learning behavior.
Executive Function and School Support Classes
Many executive functioning schools are now building skill-building into their curriculum. Executive function classes teach students to break tasks into steps, manage distractions and develop self-monitoring habits. These are not tutoring sessions but structured programs to build real-world independence.
When students with executive functioning challenges are in the right environment, with consistent support, they can develop long-term, practical skills that will follow them into adulthood.
